The APOE gene variants, particularly APOE ε4, are associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and cardiovascular disease. Some evidence suggests links to mood disorders. Understanding one’s APOE genotype can help assess Alzheimer’s risk, cognitive health, and potentially inform treatment strategies for mental health conditions. You can get APOE gene testing done in a lot of different genetic tests.
You get two genes, one from each parent. Individuals who have two copies of these four variants may have an increased risk of Alzheimer’s 8 to 12 fold, that’s significant
We test this on all our clients, and if someone has double e4, we’re going to do everything we can to optimize their brain health.
The other thing to realize is, that even the people with two copies of the e4, doesn’t mean they’re going to get Alzheimer’s. If these people are good with lifestyle, exercise, sleep, stress reduction, and etc, their risk can be brought back to that of the normal population.
