Dr. Riskin’s Take:
This study looked at the protective brain effects of giving post-menopausal women estrogen-based hormone replacement for longer than ten years. Researchers noticed that this estrogen therapy reduced the risk of dementia. This research is part of a larger question around aging and hormones – a topic that seems to divide the medical profession.
My take is that hormones play a crucial role in aging and disease prevention. Wherever possible, we should use lifestyle interventions – nutrition, mindfulness, gratitude, vigorous exercise – to keep up our innate hormone production. When this is not possible, hormone replacement can be considered.
