Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a 3,000-year-old medical system based on promoting health by balancing the body’s various systems. Our doctors of TCM will thoroughly evaluate your physical, mental and emotional state and your lifestyle to formulate a personalized treatment strategy. Your practitioner may use herbal medicines, acupuncture, dietary therapy, nutritional supplements, biopuncture injection therapy, and a variety of other treatments to address a wide range of ailments, including, but not limited to, the following:

Allergic rhinitis is inflammation of the nasal mucosa triggered by allergens. A family history of allergies increases the likelihood of developing allergic rhinitis, especially where other atopic (allergy–related) conditions like eczema and asthma exist. While the average age of onset is 8–11 years, allergic rhinitis may occur at any age.

With seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) – commonly known as “hay fever” – allergens produce symptoms around the same time each year. Tree pollens typically cause spring attacks while grass pollens dominate in the summer and weed pollens prevail in autumn. Most sufferers are sensitive to more than one allergen.

Perennial allergic rhinitis (PAR) occurs year-round. People allergic to house dust mites or household pets, for instance, tend to suffer regardless of the season.

Symptoms of allergic rhinitis: itchy nose, mouth/palate, eyes, throat, skin or ears; clear runny nose (rhinitis); impaired sense of smell; sneezing (often frequent, prolonged and violent); nasal congestion; teary eyes; post-nasal drip; wheezing; persistent cough; sore throat; crease across top of nose; dark circles under eyes; edematous nasal mucosa

To give patients immediate and lasting relief from allergic rhinitis, TCM doctors apply a combination of Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture to simultaneously address the acute symptoms of allergic rhinitis and strengthen the immune system’s resistance to triggers.

Reducing reliance on inhalers for chronic and severe asthma, Chinese herbs decrease airway inflammation, improve lung capacity, diminish wheezing and coughing, and strengthen resistance to triggers. To treat the whole body and address asthma’s underlying factors, we develop a herbal formula customized to each patient’s constitution.

Because the protocol is holistic, concurrent symptoms frequently resolve during treatment. Patients commonly report improvements in digestion, skin conditions and menstrual health.

Chinese medicine offers a unique and effective perspective on the management of autoimmune diseases. Rather than suppressing the immune system, this medicine seeks to bring balance to the body’s many systems which work in concert together.

A customized treatment protocol involving acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet and lifestyle modifications is tailored to meet the individual needs of the patient. Treatment is first directed to control the acute symptoms and manifestations of the disease, easing pain, inflammation and stress. Once this has been achieved, treatment is aimed at modulating the immune system to stabilize the condition and help to prevent future flares. This approach allows patients to avoid or reduce reliance on immunosuppressant drugs and steroids which can cause systemic side effects.

Conditions that respond favorably to treatment include:

  • Alopecia Areata
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Grave’s Disease
  • Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Psoriasis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Sjogren’s Syndrome
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Vitiligo

Our Doctors of Traditional Chinese Medicine have years of experience helping patients to navigate their often challenging journey with autoimmune diseases. Results vary depending on the severity and duration of the condition, as well as the constitution of the individual. Always, these diseases are worth treating.

A healthy digestive system is essential to whole body wellness. Whether you suffer from digestive illness or simply feel your digestion isn’t optimal, we’ll treat the root cause and the symptoms of your digestive woes.

Digestive issues we commonly treat: bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas, heartburn, indigestion, Crohn’s disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis

Our doctors of TCM will assess how your food choices are working for or against you, offering solutions that needn’t be complicated or overly restrictive. Recognizing that food is medicine (or poison), we customize recommendations specific to your body’s current needs. (As the digestive system is best treated directly, we can create a customized Chinese herbal medicine formula you simply stir into hot water and drink.)

We may also recommend acupuncture to help calm or stimulate your digestive system, reduce painful cramping or manage your stress.

Far more than simply feeling tired after a bad night’s sleep, fatigue is a persistent lack of energy and motivation. It may be felt as physical exhaustion, mental lethargy/foggy-headedness or both.

While many people try to overcome fatigue using stimulants like caffeine or mustering the will to keep going, determining and treating the cause of fatigue is the only sustainable solution.

Common causes of fatigue: thyroid issues, adrenal stress, anemia, depression, diabetes, heart disease, nutritional deficiencies, insomnia, sleep apnea.

Our doctors of TCM will delve deep to uncover the cause of your fatigue and determine treatment options, including acupuncture, Chinese herbs, supplements, biopuncture, dietary therapy and more.

Sharp, shooting, dull, aching, throbbing, pounding, prickly, cramping, crushing, pinching, burning…these are just some of the words our patients use to describe their pain. Others find is difficult to describe, saying only that “It hurts!”

Does your pain cripple you? Does it keep you from activities you’d otherwise enjoy? Perhaps your pain is ever-present – something you’ve simply learned to endure.

Common causes of pain: muscle tension, injury, arthritis, repetitive strain injury, fibromyalgia, headaches/migraines, digestive pain, menstrual pain, chronic illness

Acupuncture is a powerful therapy for treating and managing pain while seeking to remedy the root cause. Most research on acupuncture centres around pain, so its effectiveness is well-documented. It does not interfere with any medications, it is not painful, and many of our patients find it brings a sense of deep relaxation. You may find your pain reduced immediately during treatment, or it may take a few sessions if your pain is longstanding.

Another effective pain treatment option is biopuncture – the injection of natural remedies to help relieve pain, reduce inflammation, release muscle spasms and accelerate healing.

Chinese herbal formulas have also long been used to treat pain.

Restful sleep is vital to good health. Without sufficient sleep, we make poor decisions, have slower reaction times, battle more with our emotions, get sick more often, suffer more pain and perform below our potential. Poor sleep has also been linked to weight gain, cardiovascular disease, depression, anxiety and other chronic illnesses.

Common sleep disorders: problems falling asleep, frequent waking, light sleeping, excessive snoring, sleep apnea, jet lag

In seeking the source of your sleep problem, our doctors of TCM ill ask not only about your sleep but about other health conditions, dietary choices, lifestyle habits and medical history.

We use acupuncture to help you find restorative sleep – something that often happens right on the treatment table! We may create customized Chinese herbal formulas to rebalance your system and help you relax into restful sleep. We can also make recommendations for TCM food cures, lifestyle habits and supplements.

Deadlines, relationship issues, money worries, health concerns, family matters…these are just a few common sources of stress. When stress becomes chronic – a persistent part of your life – your body and mind will begin to suffer.

Common health issues caused by chronic stress: poor sleep, weight gain, aggravation of chronic illness, fatigue, diminished mental focus, memory issues, low libido, frequent colds and flu, pain, depression, anxiety.

TCM recognizes the powerful connection between our thoughts, emotions and physical bodies. How people respond to stress – with anger, fear, worry, sadness or other – impacts specific systems differently, so our TCM doctors will ask about your current and past symptoms, emotional landscape, lifestyle habits and more.

To help patients manage stress and reduce its impacts on health and wellness, we use acupuncture, Chinese herbs, supplements, biopuncture, dietary recommendations and lifestyle guidance.

Women’s health is an area in which Chinese medicine enjoys great success. The hormonal system responds quickly to treatment with acupuncture and herbs.

Conditions that respond favourably to treatment: breast health (mammary hyperplasia, mastitis), endometriosis, hormone imbalances, infertility, menopause, menstrual irregularity (dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), PMS/PMDD, pregnancy-related conditions (morning sickness; threatened or recurrent miscarriage)
